The 2003 Course

This was the repertoire list for the 2003 course

* Overture to Midsummer Night's Dream - Mendelssohn
* Symphony 40 (with Clarinets) - Mozart
* Symphony 4 - Brahms
* Nutcracker Suite - Tchaikovsky
* Simple Symphony - Britten

Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen - Mahler
Concerto for Orchestra - Bartók

An asterisk means that the piece is "core" repertoire.

Albert Riemenschneider's edition of the Bach Chorales was also used for the choral singing sessions

Overture to Midsummer night's dream - Mendelssohn

Dover publish the overture in their Major Orchestral Works collection at $19.95 or £13.00 (Amazon)

There is an Eulenburg edition at $6.50 (Eulenberg is owned by Schott).

Kalmus publish a full score of the Overture at $30.00 and of the complete work at $90.00 (this seems so expensive that maybe it includes orchestral parts as well?)

Warner publish a miniature score - edited by Marty Winkler

Musica Budapest publish a miniature score of the complete work (40075) at $9.95. Musica Budapest editions are available from Boosey and Hawkes in the UK

Breitkopf and Härtel publish Midsummer's Night's Dream in volume five of their collected works series (SON403) at E199.

The overture to Mendelssohn's incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (opus 21) is the best known section of the complete work and was written in 1826 when Mendelssohn was 17. It sets the magical, mystical stage for Shakespeare's much-loved play. The rest of the Incidental Music (opus 61) was written 16 years later.

Symphony 40 - Mozart

Probably the cheapest edition of the Mozart symphony is the Dover edition which includes the seven final symphonies 35-41. This is a reproduction of the 19th century Breitkopf & Härtel edition.

This volume provides a great way to get seven scores for a relatively low cost but as a facsimile of an old edition it is not the most accurate or scholarly.

Bäerenreiter publish the definitive urtext editions and they have two options: Score (BA4724) at E25.00 or Study Score (TP40) at E8.00. Beware BA4710 - this is the version without clarinets.

Editions are also available from Kalmus, Breitkopf & Härtel and Ricordi

Symphony 4 - Brahms

Dover again offer an economical solution - the our symphonies are available in one publication at $19.95

Editions are also available from Kalmus, Breitkopf & Härtel and Ricordi

Nutcracker suite - Tchaikovsky

Dover provide an affordable version at $11.95.

Editions are also available from Kalmus and Breitkopf & Härtel

Simple Symphony (op 4, 1934) - Britten

The Simple Symphony is published by OUP who were Britten's first publisher. A study score is available for purchase - the full score appears to be only available for hire with the parts.

Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen - Mahler (1860-1911)

Songs of a Wayfarer. Completed 1884 (piano version) and 1896 (orchestral version), first performance 1896, in Berlin. Scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (2nd doubling English Horn), 3 clarinets (3rd doubling bass clarinet), 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, harp, tympani, bass drum, cymbals, triangle, glockenspiel, and strings.

Published in Urtexte by Deutsche Peters, click here to go to the Edition Peters site (Catalog ID: EP9264)

Kalmus also publish an edition.

Concerto for Orchestra (1943 rev. 1945) - Bartók

Published by Boosey and Hawkes in their Master Works edition. The price is £16.99 plus P&P (£3 within the UK) and the score includes the original and the revised versions.

There is a book available on the Concerto for Orchestra by David Cooper, published by the Cambridge University Press.

This was the repertoire list for the 2003 Practical Conducting course

St. Anthony Variations - Brahms
